The Escondido American Legion Unit 149 was recently invited to participate in an event called the Encinitas Turkey Trot in which 100 food baskets along with a $30 prepaid VISA card would be distributed to military families. The founders of the Encinitas event were asked to contribute some of the fees paid to enter the 5K & 10K races on Thanksgiving Day back to the community. The Encinitas American Legion Auxiliary Unit 461 contacted our Auxiliary Unit 149 and Ann Marie Brown, Diana Young, and Irene Clingman helped to assemble the food baskets and then distributed them to veterans and military families. Irene distributed 42 baskets through the following agencies: Interfaith Community Services accepted 36 on behalf of military families participating in several of their programs; one basket was accepted by Silvia Jacobsen, Principal of Twin Oaks School, on behalf of a military family; three baskets were distributed to Operation Homefront families; and two food baskets went to Blue Star Mom families. Anne Marie and Diana distributed seventeen food baskets to various individuals who were veteran and military families.
This was a wonderful event, and we were so happy to be able to participate! In addition, we met many new friends within different organizations who provide services to our military families throughout the county and heard many remarkable stories of veterans who were able to survive the hardships of military service. A special thanks to all those who serve our country to protect our freedoms.
